20-ways to do the Wild West
*
The London Observer, Sunday 25 November 2007 By Jane Dunford
*
“16. ARIZONA'S RICH HILL - In the Wild West great fortunes were made and lost and visitors can seek their own on a gold prospecting holiday at Rich Hill in the rugged Weaver mountains of Arizona. From Phoenix, you travel to the historic town of Wickenburg, then head to the hills, passing old mining claims along Antelope Creek. Expert miners will teach you how to pan for gold - and you get to keep what you find. Comfortable camping is provided in trailers and tents, and nights are spent around the fire. A four-day three-night trip costs $1,499 plus tax per person, including food and drink, camping and equipment, training and transfers, excluding airfares. arizonagoldadventures.com.”

Some that glitters really is gold.

By Dan Sorenson, The Arizona Daily Star, Tucson, May 27, 2009
“..Solomon, a former Phoenician, has been taking the gold-seeking tourists to the Bradshaw and Weaver mountains near Wickenburg for the last couple of years, visiting the once aptly named Rich Hill and the ghost towns of Congress and Humbug. So far, Solomon has guided about 50 clients in Arizona, just one person or a few at a time.
Solomon just expanded the operation with a Southern Arizona division based in Tucson. Gold-prospecting tourists now can visit and work claims that the company has permission to use near Arivaca, about 50 miles southwest of Tucson..”

A Modern Day Gold Rush - BusinessWeek - July 11, 2010

…Adventure Trips

Many companies are banking on that. Three years ago, Terry Soloman decided to turn his lifelong passion for prospecting into a formal business with Arizona Gold Adventures in Congress, Ariz. Soloman gets two types of customers: families wanting an outdoor vacation and individuals serious about prospecting.

With his children out of the house and the price of gold rising, Soloman turned the recreational prospecting trips he had taken for some two decades into a formal business. Now he has about 400 visitors a season. The average customer finds one to two grams, says Soloman, but some get even luckier. "You've got other people who walk away with several ounces," he said. "You've got to have a little luck." Lucky or not, Soloman says everyone leaves with legitimate prospecting skills for his $349 daily fee. Those wanting more serious skills now make up about 40 percent of his business, double the number before gold surged, Soloman said.

Pining for Gold Mining: Heli Between Prospects in Arizona.
*
Jaunted, the Pop Culture Travel Guide June, 2009
*
“..If the streams all get picked over during this recession, we may see more and more helicopter tours departing to harder-to-reach areas, ever in search of a record find. For $4,000 per couple, you can hop such a chopper at Phoenix's Sky Harbor Airport for a 5-day vacation of flying over mesas and setting down for a little private claim digging—after instruction on the best methods, of course.
*
There are longer and further trips available for the hardcore treasure hunters, but we'd think that 5 days working hard for the money (er, gold) in the hot Arizona sun should be plenty to satisfy your curiosity about heli-gold-digging.”
